liberalism, improvement, excellence

Oooh, you started this...
My son is an impoverished, excellent student. If he had an opportunity to
attend S&M, he would do so on scholarship b/c we don't have the cash on
hand to send him anywhere. Attending S&M would improve him, but it would
be because his schools don't live up to the standard of excellence asked
for by some folks. He is admitted to two of the top camps for 10 year olds
in the nation -- he is not attending the second one b/c they let us know
too late to plan or do for their camp. He is scholarshipped into both
camps. Why? Because not only are we impoverished liberals, but he has a
mother who has taken the time and hte opportunity to advocate for him.
Before you judge others, take a look at your home. You can be the world's
greatest republican or democrat, but if you don't put your family first
then you are a part of the problem. (Just as the TX dad put a stereotype
and bigotry ahead of his family. Our current president is a fine example
of only pretending to put family first.)
And, yes, my son's stepfather is a West Virginian who doesn't have all his
teeth, but he's smarter than most of the people I know from NCSU, UNC or
Duke. His mother had to make the money for the family and couldn't do for
her children the way we do for our children. And there may be a magnate
school in the Northern Panhandle, but there certainly isn't one near Green
Bank or us here in the South.
