New York Apartment needed

Thought it couldn't hurt to throw a feeler out there.  I'm moving up  
to NYC May 1 and need an apartment.  Looking at $1200-$1400/month and  
have 2 cats so I know a one bedroom in midtown isn't happening - but  
I'd be happy with a 1 bedroom further up north or a studio that's at  
least 400 sf.  Just graduated law school (or will have) so i don't  
have a job yet but would have an NC guarantor who has lots of money  
in the bank.  Can't pay a huge broker fee.

If anyone works in rentals up there, or just happens to know someone  
who is renting out something that fits the bill, would you drop me a  
line?  The process is about to kill me especially since I'm still  
down in NC until the day I move up.
