The team that made it to the finals of the Siemens Competition in
Math, Science and Technology placed third:

The UNC system has now become involved with the soccer field/track
lighting controversy. An aide to the system president is, basically,
asking UNC-Chapel Hill's Facilities Services department to have an
engineer (hopefully with some lighting experience) sit down with both
parties and try to work something out. Apparently Erskine Bowles
himself had a part in it.

I'm not sure that I've seen a cost estimate for the field before.

Also, there were some stories about NCSSM becoming an "educational
partner" in IBM's World Community Grid. (It's similar to Folding at home
or SETI at home, but you can choose from multiple projects, making it
more like BOINC.) NCSSM is encouraging students, faculty, and staff
to run the client on their computers. They also got to video
conference with some of the scientists behind it.

NCSSM becomes a member of the UNC system officially on July 1, 2007.
