I kind of think the program worked fine without anything more
structured/mandated. "Little brother", "big sister", etc., became terms of
endearment, whether or not you continued to move in the same circles. When
time becomes precious as the semester kicks in, "having" to spend time with
someone becomes a burden, even if you don't mind their company.
For the record, I had 3 little brothers -- Ashley Salter, Erich Buehler,
and Jonathan Jordan.
Do they still recruit rising seniors to write letters to rising juniors the
summer before to answer questions? I had a great letter writer whose name
completely escapes me (Lisa something? '84) who answered all kinds of
questions before I thought of them -- from dorm life to teachers, pros and
cons of asking to room with someone you knew, etc., etc.
