My apologies for any vagueries: the "family" that I spoke of was the =
alumni "aunts and uncles." And they would not go unread, but =
unanswered. Letters from family proper are greeted with enthusiasm. =

i certainly see most of what you're getting at, especially the =
surliness part. (spent some time at christmas with 11-year-old-sister =
and was amazed that she has that down already!) however, i disagree =
about the bit about things marked 'family' going unread. i know deanne =
- and some others on the hall - couldn't wait for the next nonsensical =
letter from my daddy to give a momentary distraction. so fine line, =
yes, but not impossible.
